Ben wanted nothing more than to wring Jamie's neck after hearing her cold, cutting words.

“I don’t need your lectures,” he growled.

Human nature? Didn’t she think he knew enough about it already? He had seen it in every case he handled, and he had learned it the hardest way through her betrayal.

When he fell for Jamie, it had been with the intent to marry her, to share a future. But she had stabbed him in the back without hesitation. And yet, when he tried to hate her, tried to wish for her downfall, he couldn’t bring himself to follow through.

Summer refused to back down. “Then, let me talk to him face to face, Mrs. Lucas. Even if he insists on keeping Jamie around, we can create a facade to ease everyone’s concerns. Once I’m officially Mrs. Lucas, I can secure my place. Maybe even have a child with him and then, he won’t have a reason to look back at Jamie.”

Summer was determined to use time and circumstance to her advantage. After all, beauty fades, and Ben’s obsession with Jamie would eventually wane.

Ben wasn’t willing to listen to Mrs. Lucas anymore, and their relationship had already soured. Expecting him to come back on her call was futile.

He wasn’t coming back.

Naturally, Mrs. Lucas didn’t want Summer to go looking for him either. The last thing she wanted was for Summer to get hurt in the process. “Don’t go after him. I’ll handle Ben. He’s not thinking clearly right now, and I’m afraid he might lash out at you.”
