Life is unpredictable. Every twist and turn happens in the blink of an eye, and fate had long chosen her path, forcing him to move forward relentlessly, unable to look back.

“Jamie!”

She jolted awake, her eyes darting around in the haze, barely making out Ben’s shadowy figure in the distance. She ran toward him, laughing softly as she teased, “Attorney Lucas, you’re looking more and more impressive these days.”

But Ben’s expression didn’t soften at her lighthearted remark. Instead, his eyes narrowed as he closed the distance between them. “Cut the act. How are you going to repay what you owe me?”

Jamie rubbed her temples. What was going on? Why did it feel like she had forgotten so much? Of course, they were strangers now. That was all they had become.

When she looked up again, Ben had his hand around her neck, veins bulging beneath his pale skin.

“How will you repay me?”

He advanced menacingly, his face twisted with fury. Jamie felt beads of sweat forming on her forehead.

“Ben, stay back! Don’t come any closer!”

The nightmare consumed her entirely. Deep down, she knew it wasn’t real, but she couldn’t escape its clutches.

Meanwhile, Ben stood beside her bed, his thin lips pressed into a firm line.

“Are you really that afraid of me? If you’re so scared, then why did you leave me in the first place?”

Jamie didn’t respond, her hands clutching her collar tightly, her body drenched in sweat, her face pale as a sheet.

Ben quickly realized something was wrong. He leaned down, gently tapping her cheek, his voice soft in a way that betrayed his usual demeanor.

“Jamie, wake up. You’re having a bad dream.”

“You have ten minutes to get here.”

“Ben, I still need to get dressed. And unless I plan to break the speed limit, I can’t make it in ten—”

“You now have nine minutes and fifty seconds.”

“You tyrant.” Caleb muttered a curse before hanging up abruptly.

Exactly ten minutes later, the roar of an engine echoed outside as Caleb’s car screeched to a halt.

He rushed inside, barely catching his breath before Ben dragged him upstairs to the bedroom.

“Take a look at her. What’s going on here? She’s had the shot and taken the medication, but there’s no improvement. If anything, it’s worse. She’s burning up, and I can’t wake her.” Ben’s tone was edged with urgency.
