The masked man slammed the door shut, his temper flaring as he glanced into the rearview mirror at Winnie. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”

Winnie remained silent.

“If it didn’t work, we’d both be done for,” he snapped, his tone edged with frustration.

Her voice was calm, almost detached. “He’s my nephew, and his health isn’t good. Dragging him into a life on the run would do more harm than good.”

The man let out a bitter laugh. “So what now? You really plan on living like this forever?”

“Do you have some miraculous plan to turn this all around? I’ve already burned every bridge with him,” Winnie said, her tone laced with bitterness.

Yet, as she spoke, a faint glimmer of hope ignited within her, sparked by the man's words.

He pulled the car to a screeching halt, frantically steadying the wheel before jumping out and checking on her. Seeing the blood, his face paled.

It hit him that she must have had a recent miscarriage and hadn’t properly recovered, leading to this hemorrhage.

Without hesitation, he carried her to the back seat, slammed the door, and sped toward the nearest hospital, his urgency palpable.

“Should we keep chasing them?” one asked.

“No need,” Ben replied, shaking his head. He bent down to gently pinch Charlie’s cheek.

“Aunt Winnie was great, but…” Charlie hesitated, his expression conflicted. He decided to keep quiet about the grown-ups’ matters, knowing they weren’t his to share.

Jamie longed to hold him tighter but hesitated, remembering her recent illness and his fragile health. Reluctantly, she released him.

She looked up at Ben, her voice sincere. “Thank you, Ben, for bringing him back to me.”

Ben cleared his throat, his tone distant. “I did it for the kid, not for you. No need to thank me.”

Jamie understood his coldness and turned to Charlie. “Go thank Uncle Ben properly.”

Charlie puffed out his chest like a little adult, his voice clear and bold. “Uncle Ben, thanks for bringing me back this time, but if you ever bully my mom, I won’t let you get away with it!”

Ben chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Big words for a little guy.”

But as he crouched down to meet Charlie’s eyes, a warmth spread through him. His gaze softened. “Take care of your mom, okay?”

Charlie beamed with pride. “Of course!”

Jamie cleared her throat softly. “Mr. Lucas, the room isn’t a great place for a child right now. There’s still lingering sickness in the air. Could you take him out for a bit?”
