“What kind of job?” Ben asked.

“I’m still looking,” Jamie replied.

“In that case, why not work for me?” Ben suggested without hesitation.

Jamie froze, momentarily stunned by his directness.

She was about to refuse when Ben, seemingly predicting her reaction, added, “Don’t be so quick to say no. If you join any other top-tier company, whether as HR or in another role, the pay won’t compare. What I can offer is far better than anything they can.”

His words left her silent.

If this were a romantic confession, it would undoubtedly be the most alluring kind. Who wouldn’t want a job with great benefits?

But working under Ben? That was a mental hurdle Jamie wasn’t sure she could overcome.

After a long pause, she said, “Let me think about it.”

Ben didn’t press her, giving her three days to decide. By then, Charlie would be starting preschool, leaving her with more time to work.

“It’s not me.”

“Sure, sure, it’s not you. Go on.”

Jamie sighed and explained her current predicament, including Ben’s job offer.

Nina responded decisively, “What’s there to hesitate about? Obviously, you take the better option! The opportunity is practically being handed to you. All you have to do is reach out and take it.”

Her phone rang, snapping her out of her shock.

Seeing the caller ID, Jamie answered, her voice tinged with concern. “Ben, are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Just take care of Charlie. I won’t be coming by for a while,” Ben replied calmly, offering no further details about his situation.

But Jamie knew him too well. His silence spoke volumes.

“Are you sure you’re okay? If you need me to step forward and clarify things, I will. This much bad press can’t be good for Lucas Corporation,” she said, frowning.

“That won’t be necessary. Just focus on taking care of yourself and Charlie,” Ben said firmly.

With that, he gave a few brief instructions and hung up.

Jamie stared at her phone, then glanced at Charlie, who was still napping peacefully. A reliable helper would be arriving later to clean, so there was nothing to worry about at home.
