Jamie stayed by Linda’s side throughout the examination.
When the results came back, the doctor adjusted his glasses, his expression unusually serious. “It appears her brain has been damaged by drugs. Do you know what might have happened to her in the past?”
Jamie clenched her hands tightly, her voice trembling. “My mom went missing for many years. We don’t know much about what happened during that time.”
The doctor studied them carefully, but their genuine expressions dispelled any suspicion he might have had.
“It seems that during those years, someone injected her with harmful substances.”
Jamie’s heart sank. “Does that mean she’ll be like this forever?”
Her voice quivered as the fear gripped her. She couldn’t bear the thought of her mother living like this for the rest of her life.
Sensing her tension, the doctor softened his tone. “Don’t worry. With proper care, there’s still a chance she could recover.”
A wave of relief washed over Jamie. It matched what Wilfred had said earlier. There was still hope.
For Jamie, that slim possibility was everything. Even if she could provide for Linda’s needs for a lifetime, the thought of her suffering from confusion and helplessness was unbearable.
Linda was also Charlie’s grandmother. Jamie feared how he would react. He was still young, and she wasn’t sure if he could understand or accept the situation.
The thought weighed on her as she left the hospital. She had sent Charlie to Mrs. Lucas’s house, avoiding any immediate contact between him and Linda. It was convenient since the weekend allowed him to stay there for two days without question.
But what about after that? Jamie couldn’t keep her son and mother apart forever.
She fell into a pensive silence on the way home.
Ben noticed her unease and reached out to hold her hand. Jamie looked over at him, startled.
“Charlie is a kind and understanding child. If you explain things to him carefully, he’ll understand.”
Jamie nodded, feeling slightly reassured.
This change was evident in her interactions with the helper. At first, Linda would cower or avoid her entirely. But now, Linda even observed the helper with a curious expression as she went about her tasks.
“Miss Lewis, the food is ready. I’ll be heading out soon,” the helper said, bringing dishes to the table.
Jamie smiled politely. “Thank you for your hard work. You can take tomorrow off to rest. I’ll add extra to your payment for these past few busy days.”
The helper’s face lit up with gratitude, but her expression quickly shifted when she noticed Linda staring intently at her.
“Uh… this…”
“Sorry about that,” Jamie quickly apologized, her tone both polite and slightly embarrassed. “My mom tends to be like this with strangers.”
Jamie didn’t try to stop Linda, though. The doctor had advised her to encourage Linda's reactions to the outside world, no matter how small, as long as they weren’t overly stimulated.
Fortunately, the helper’s initial surprise quickly faded. “It’s fine,” she said with a reassuring smile. “There’s no harm in looking. Would you like some soup? I can ladle some for you.”
