Caleb suddenly yanked Vera forward.
She hadn’t expected it at all and fell straight onto his chest.
The sudden movement startled her, and instinctively, she tried to push herself up. But before she could, Caleb tightened his grip around her waist, holding her even closer.
“Luna, I gave you my whole damn heart, and this is how you treat me?
“I proposed to you over and over again, like a fool, always at your beck and call. And what did you do? You trampled all over my feelings.”
His hold was crushing, his face so close that Vera could feel the sharp bridge of his nose pressing against her.
Then, as his lips moved closer, she panicked and quickly slapped a hand over his mouth.
“It’s not that I trampled on your feelings,” she said carefully, playing along.
If he thought she was Luna, then so be it. “It’s just that I’ve been too busy. I… I’m a career-driven woman. Love has always been a luxury to me.”
Drunk as he was, Caleb was at his most vulnerable.
This was the perfect moment for her to get closer to him.
But it would be taking advantage of him—and after everything he had done to help her, she couldn’t bring herself to do that.
“Is that so?” Caleb let out a bitter chuckle, his voice a low, murmured whisper.
Vera nodded. “That’s exactly it. Otherwise, why would I always call you first whenever something happens?”
“Then… will you marry me?”
Vera froze.
For a second, she wasn’t sure how to respond. But seeing how lost he looked, she simply whispered, “I will.”
She was only trying to comfort him, but the moment she spoke, Caleb pulled her in even tighter.
It became difficult to breathe. She struggled slightly and finally had to push against his chest. “Let me go, I—I can’t breathe.”
“Oh… sorry.”
Caleb immediately loosened his hold, releasing her completely.
She hadn’t taken advantage of his drunkenness.
For someone in her position, she could have easily played her cards differently—but she hadn’t.
That kind of sincerity was rare.
“Wake up,” he said, his voice low but firm. “Let’s go grab some breakfast. After that, I’ll take you shopping. You need something decent to wear for your meeting at York Corporation.”
Vera stirred, her eyes red and groggy from lack of sleep.
Caleb frowned slightly. Just how late had she stayed up watching over him?
“I can go by myself,” she mumbled, trying to wake up. “If you’re busy, don’t worry about me.”
Caleb let out a low chuckle. “You’re my girlfriend now, at least in name. If you show up in outdated clothes and a cheap bag, won’t that just embarrass me?”
Vera lowered her head, her face burning with embarrassment.
Then Caleb added casually, “And really, if I passed out, you could’ve just asked one of the staff to keep an eye on me. Why did you stay? Were you that worried something would happen to me?”
