How could it be him?
"What are you doing here?"
Nina was still very cautious. She hadn't had much contact with him, only meeting once because of the situation with Miranda. His sudden appearance made her suspicious, wondering if he had followed her or had other motives.
Wilfred's expression showed a bit of surprise, but he calmly said, "I live next door."
Nina looked at him, not quite understanding what he meant.
Seeing her wary and confused look, Wilfred pointed to the adjacent door and explained, "I'm your new neighbor."
Nina looked at the open door next to hers and realized the empty apartment had been occupied. She turned back to Wilfred and asked, "When did you move in?"
"This morning."
"I remember when I came to find you before, your workplace looked more like a place you lived," Nina said, thinking he had stayed there.
"No, I rest there when I'm busy, but I still need a private space."
Nina recalled their previous encounters, which seemed a bit too coincidental.
To ease her concerns, Wilfred added, "This is just another coincidence. You don't have to be so guarded around me. I won't harm you."
He had helped her last time. If not for his prompt assistance, she would not have found evidence of Miranda's hearing loss so quickly.
"I don't mean it that way," Nina said, not forgetting his help. "I just don't understand why you're knocking on my door."
Wilfred held out a bowl of strawberries. "I just moved in. Here's a little gift for the neighbors. I grew these strawberries. Give them a try."
Nina looked at the large, deep red strawberries, almost black, and found them quite interesting. "What kind of strawberries are these? I've never seen this variety before. Is it a new type?"
"Didn't know you had that skill," Nina remarked.
"It's nothing special. There was a plot of land on the farm that had been unused for a long time. There wasn't much else to plant, so I decided to grow strawberries," Wilfred explained.
"All strawberries?" Nina asked.
"Mostly strawberries, but there are other things too. If you're interested, I can show you around sometime," Wilfred offered kindly.
Nina had not expected him to say that. She felt like he was very attentive to her, remembering and helping with anything she mentioned. She wondered if it was just her imagination.
Her initial impression of Wilfred was not very positive. Her body reacted with an instinctive need to distance herself from him.
The smell of disinfectant on him made her uncomfortable, possibly because she did not like hospitals. It was not a bias against his profession. It was a natural aversion to doctors and hospitals.
But Wilfred had helped her, so she could not ignore his kindness.
