My heart skipped a few beats. Anna never touched my phone. It was the first time, but if I snatched the phone from her, she was going to use it against me.

"Love, what are you doing?" I asked her gently. "I want to talk to my mother."

My mother-in-law's voice came through the phone. "My son-in-law, you finally remembered you have this old mother. Tell me, where is my crazy nut daughter? How is she?"

My brain died on the spot. She threw me under the bus just like that.

"Huh, nuts? Crazy? Mrs. Swan, you are such a heartless woman. You sold your daughter and let the mafia guy kidnap her. I have never seen such a generous mother, Mary. Tell me the truth.
