“You need to learn how to hunt,” the lioness advised Nyx. “If they abandon you, you’ll have to survive on your own.” 

A cub abandoned during its early years had little chance of survival. But if it learnt some hunting skills, its chances improved slightly. 

The best scenario would be if the males raised her a bit longer before abandoning her, giving her a chance to join a pride. 

But even to join a pride, she would need to know how to hunt. A pride wouldn’t support a lioness who couldn’t hunt. 

Nyx flattened her ears. Although she believed her mates wouldn’t abandon her, her mother’s words made sense. She couldn’t continue lazing around like this. 

During her cubhood, she could rely on her mates to provide for her, but if she had to live here until adulthood, she needed to learn to hunt as well. 

The lioness was about to give a few more reminders when she suddenly lifted her head, catching a scent on the wind. She quickly turned and ran off, saying, “I have to go now. I’ll come see you again when I can.”

Realizing this, the two male lions became more tolerant and even planned to provoke the Red Mountain Pride a few more times in the future. 

By intruding into the Red Mountain Pride’s territory, they could not only hunt better prey but also beat up Black Scar, who had nearly killed Nyx before.

Nyx’s heart raced. She sharpened her claws, eager to try it herself. The instincts of a predator were awakening within her. 

When the male lions returned with their prize, she jumped down from the rock and ran to them, mimicking their movements–stalking, charging, and pouncing at their necks.

Of course, she didn’t actually bite down hard. She didn’t even reach them, as the size difference made her miss. 

But the male lions finally understood her intentions. “Nyx wants to learn how to hunt?” 

They exchanged glances, feeling a bit guilty. They had been so focused on feeding Nyx that they had neglected to teach her hunting skills. An experienced lioness would have started the lessons much earlier. 

They thought first step in learning was observation. “Nyx, starting tomorrow, we’ll take you hunting with us every day” 

Recalling how they had learned to hunt as cubs, the two male lions began taking Nyx along on their hunts, letting her observe the process closely. 

After a few days, they felt she was ready and found a group of rabbits for Nyx to practice on

They never learned their lesson and often lingered nearby to watch the drama, only to be targeted by the lions again. 

Nyx focused on the largest male rabbit closest to her. 

She crept forward silently, judging the right moment before launching her attack. 

Compared to before, her body was no longer weak. She had gained strength, and her speed and stamina had improved significantly. 

But she still failed. 

The rabbits that dared to live near lions were experts at escaping. 

After a frantic chase, Nyx came close several times but ultimately couldn’t catch the rabbit, watching it disappear into its burrow. 

Failure was normal for a first attempt. The males encouraged Nyx to try again.
