Chapter 75

Kaia's POV

“Why did you hate me?” I asked him.

His head jerked upward to meet mine, his face scrunched up in confusion like he couldn't believe I would ask something like that. But it was a question I've asked myself over and over time. I don't think I did anything to him…apart from being weak, but that didn't affect him personally.

Everyone knew we weren't really related, so he couldn't claim that he was ashamed.

“Hate you? Why would you think that?"

"You're seriously asking me that?” I deadpanned. "We spent years being siblings and this is our first normal conversation that doesn't have me trembling.”

He looked away, "it doesn't mean…I didn't hate you." He said, a sigh escaping his lips. “I don't hate you."

I raised an eyebrow at him, my hands crossed in front of me. “You want me to believe that? You're going to have to make it believable."

“Damn girl! You do know how to take care of yourself." Lylah said, and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at her and focus on Dylan, who was trying to come up with…a believable argument I guess.

For some reason, I wasn't scared to speak my mind. If this was in our pack, I wouldn't have opened my mouth to ask or say anything that doesn't sit well with him. But now, I knew he couldn't touch me…except he wanted his head ripped off his neck by Kieran.

“I was protecting you." He replied.

I scoffed, standing up from the bed and began pacing around the room. “Protecting me? The only protection I needed was from you." I snapped, and he flinched.

Taking in several needed deep breaths, I let out a sigh, running my fingers through my hair, “I didn't care that other pack members bullied me, I thought that now that I have a brother, things would be different.” my voice was more calm now.

His face fell. “I'm sorry."

“What?"

“I thought I was protecting you and when I realized it didn't seem that way, it was too late." He said.

“Is that why you helped me escape?"

He nodded, looking away. The overly confident Beta I knew was nowhere to be found and instead, a remorseful one sat in front of me. “That's part of the reason."

My brows furrowed, “there's more?"

This just keeps getting better, I came here for one reason and I haven't touched it yet.

“I was hoping that my mom would leave you and your dad alone if she saw that I didn't like you."

Fucking perfect! Just when I thought my life couldn't get any more dramatic. “You were trying to separate them? Why would you want that?”

I paused, "why do I care if they remained together?”

He left the bed and came to stand in front of me, easily towering over me. “My mom hated you.”

"Everyone knew that, no matter how much she tried to hide it. But my dad wasn't any different.” I told him, "my dad wanted power and recognition, if they'd separated, it would've been worse.”

He sighed, “I didn't think of that." He said, "I just wanted to get you as far as possible from her.”

That didn't make sense, his mom didn't like me, but she tried her best not to show that to the pack. So she pretended to care, taking me to the doctor for my drugs when I had panic attacks, giving me clothes from other pack members while she went shopping for hers.

“Why?"

"Did you ever wonder why I asked you to stop taking your drugs?”
