Chapter 77
Kaia's POV
The door burst open, revealing Kieran and Ryder. My hand around Dylan quickly dropped to my side as I stepped away from him. I'm certain that at this point Kieran was done with Dylan and was probably contemplating how to hang him somewhere.
“What's going on here?" Kieran asked, his eyes looking past me, glaring at Dylan.
By now, the two of them had separated and were now avoiding looking at Kieran. Only if they had listened to me in the first instance, this would've gone a completely different way.
“I was just introducing them to my brother.” I lied, moving to stand in front of him.
Dani snorted, but she attempted to cover it with a cough but failed miserably. We'll talk about that later.
“I came to check up on her like you asked and we were just leaving.” Allie said, finally getting over whatever came on her earlier.
Of course, he didn't buy it. He turned to Ryder, whose eyes were glued to Allie, who was also pretending not to notice him, and spoke to him through their mindlink before pulling me with him as we left the room.
“Try not to get on Ryder’s nerves, or get smart with him." I mind-linked Dylan.
“Can't promise that, it looks like it will be a lot of fun." He replied, chuckling.
“Then, it was nice knowing you."
Lylah snorted, “he's a Beta, I'm sure he can handle whatever Ryder is bringing."
"Except that Ryder is a man in love and would do anything for her even though he's trying to deny it, but he's not deceiving anyone.” I argued.
Kieran didn't say anything as he pulled me all the way to his office, shutting the door once we were inside, the sound echoing down the hallway. He wasn't angry per se, but at the same time, he wasn't his usual self.
"We were safe, I promise. And Allie really came to check up on me. But it would be rude to not introduce them to one another, don't you think?" I rushed out before he could say anything.
He raised an eyebrow, “I don't think so."
I flashed him a toothy grin, “it is. I think I should introduce the two of you officially." I started and he glared at me playfully. “He's family, you know." I added quietly.
He murmured something about not being able to get mad at me, as he hugged me, his face resting in the nook of my neck inhaling my scent. His breathing slowed as he held me and my body relaxed into his touch.
Even though he wasn't talking, I could sense that something was wrong.
“What happened?" I asked.
"Turns out more than three people died…" he started and my hand froze midair. “It's a poison and it's more poisonous in werewolves–”
"That's why it took longer to work on you." I finished for him and he nodded.
We remained in silence for a few minutes, it wasn't uncomfortable. I thought about the fact that the attack on those wolves might be a distraction, so that Kieran wouldn't pay attention to what they were planning.
But what exactly were they even playing at?
