Sarah didn’t know what Cole meant. 

She didn’t want to know either. 

Without another word, she turned on her heel and walked away, her posture stiff, her expression unreadable. 

She expected to hear him call after her, maybe demand an explanation, but he didn’t. 

He simply stood there, silent, watching her go. 

Something about Cole’s voice lingered in her mind. A strange familiarity. 

Had she heard it recently? Maybe just the other day… 

Before Sarah could think of a clue, Clara came out of the restaurant and joined her arm in arm. 

“Come on, let’s go pick out something nice for my mom,” she said cheerfully. 

Sarah let out a breath and nodded. “Alright.” 

The two of them strolled through the brightly lit streets, weaving through weekend shoppers. 

The air smelled of freshly baked pastries from a nearby café, and soft instrumental music played from hidden speakers along the sidewalk. 

It should have been a relaxing outing, but Sarah couldn’t shake the lingering tension from her encounter 

with Cole. 

They stepped into an upscale jewelry store, its display cases gleaming under soft golden lights. 

Clara immediately busied herself browsing the selections, her fingers grazing delicate necklaces and 

gemstone rings. 

Sarah wandered absently, glancing at the intricate designs without real interest. 

She was just about to check the time on her phone when a familiar, deep voice cut through the quiet 

ambiance. 

“Sarah.”

She looked up–and there he was. Clark Joseph. 

Her father. 

A man she hadn’t seen in months, and one she certainly hadn’t expected to run into here. 

His sharp suit and polished shoes screamed wealth, his neatly combed silver–streaked hair making him look every bit the respected businessman he pretended to be. 

But to Sarah, all she saw was the man who had betrayed her without a second thought. 

She didn’t acknowledge him. Instead, she turned her back, pretending not to hear. 

Clark, however, wasn’t one to be ignored. He stepped forward, his tone overly casual. “It’s been a while. 

How have you been?” 

Sarah stiffened. A bitter laugh nearly escaped her lips. *How have I been?* He had the audacity to ask that after everything? 

Clara, sensing the tension, glanced over but didn’t intervene just yet. 

Sarah exhaled through her nose, forcing her expression to remain neutral. 

“Clara, are you done?” she asked, ignoring her father completely. 

Clara picked up on her mood and nodded. “Almost. Just let me pay.” 

Sarah reached for her arm, ready to leave, but Clark was quicker. 

He sidestepped into her path, effectively blocking her way. 

“Sarah,” he said, this time firmer, his eyes scanning her face. “Can’t you at least have a simple conversation with your father?” 

She let out a short, cold laugh. “Father?” she repeated, as if the word itself was foreign. “You stopped being that the moment you pushed Linda into my marriage.” 

Clark’s expression darkened slightly, but he didn’t look guilty. “That was a misunderstanding. You’re being dramatic.” 

Sarah’s fingers curled into fists. “A misunderstanding?” she echoed, her voice sharp. “You encouraged my husband to take care of Linda, to keep her close, and you expect me to believe it was a 

misunderstanding? Do you take me for a fool?” 

Clark sighed, shaking his head as if she was being unreasonable. “Linda is your sister. She needed support, and I only did what any father would do.”
