There was a momentary silence over the line before Mandy asked quietly, "Is Cherise okay?"

"Don't let her find out about Uncle Beckham. I think, even if he wasn't physically injured, the experience will likely leave him with mental scars."

"I understand." Damien silently gave Cherise a meaningful glance as he replied to Mandy. "Don't worry, Cherise is a doctor herself. She will understand what her father needs to recover. Everything will work out."

"That's true." Mandy sighed softly before ending the call.

Damien put away his phone and turned to face his silently weeping wife.

Feeling his gaze on her, Cherise sniffed and wiped away her tears. "I'm fine. I just... I feel like... my parents have suffered too much in their lives."
