Chapter 909
Maja’s heart started to thump wildly, but the flood was already upon them. With landslides on the mountain and an earthquake in the midst of the downpour, things couldn’t get any worse.
When Maja’s consciousness started to return, she heard a man’s voice.
“Ms. Pennyfeather should be stirring soon.”
“Any issues with her head?”
“No, just a minor concussion. Might be a bit dizzy the first few days she’s awake, but she’ll be fine.”
“How’s lan?”
“Mr. Raymond’s still in the ICU. If he makes it through today, he’ll be alright.”
The mention of lan’s name immediately got Maja on edge. Ian was badly hurt, with injuries to his chest and head, and was finally swept away by the landslide. Would he really be okay?
Her heart ached as she remembered their kiss before the flood. It was light as a feather but heavier than any words spoken. She wanted to speak, but she was too weak.
When she woke up in the evening, she saw a white ceiling. By her bedside was Carol, whom she hadn’t seen in a long time.
Carol was startled when Maja woke up and immediately hugged her.
“Maja, what happened? When I heard the nurse say your name, I thought someone shared your name. Why are you in the hospital again?”
Maja and Carol hadn’t seen each other in a while, both busy with their own thing.
“Carol.” She coughed a couple of times, her chest feeling tight, making it difficult to speak.
“Take it slow, don’t speak if you can’t.” Carol gently patted her back, then whispered, “Grandpa Holden left this morning. I heard he stayed by your side all night. I couldn’t leave until he was gone.”
Hearing that Grandpa Holden had been by her bedside for so long, Maja immediately felt guilty. Holden was weak, and hearing about lan’s situation must’ve been hard on him..
“Carol, how’s lan?”
Maja didn’t know how long she’d been asleep, but she vaguely remembered someone saying lan was in the ICU. Her heart immediately sank.
“He’s out of the ICU. I heard he had a few surgeries. His chest wounds got infected, so he’s bedridden now. His head’s bandaged too. I took a peek. It’s the first time I’ve seen lan in such a state.”
Carol’s family was well–off, and she moved in the same circles as them. She always thought lan was untouchable, and she had never seen him in such a state before.
Maja immediately stopped talking. She lowered her eyes, and clung to her bedsheet. Carol sighed, poured her some water and gave it to her. “Maja, I heard it. Never mind. Just focus on getting better. You look weak.”
Maja did feel weak, even talking was painful. She laid back down, and closed her eyes. Carol watched her, gently tucking her in.
When Maja woke up the next day, the doctor was administering her IV. Seeing her awake, he began to explain her treatment.
“Ms. Miller left this morning. She’s been visiting the hospital frequently because her boyfriend’s cousin just had surgery and needs to be hospitalized for half a year, so her boyfriend visits often.”
Maja didn’t respond, her throat felt dry. The doctor checked her temperature, relieved that she wasn’t running a fever. “You’re lucky you don’t have a fever. Mr. Raymond had a fever all day yesterday and needed emergency treatment.”
Maja was alarmed and tried to sit up. “How is he? Is he okay?”
“He’s fine. He was transferred to a regular room in the wee hours of the morning.” The doctor, part of the team that had gone up the mountain to search for lan, had close ties with the Raymond family, so he looked at Maja with gentle eyes. “Mr. Raymond must really like you.”
