Was this so-called Cynthia actually Cynthia Abbott, the one who fled her wedding all those years ago? But that was ancient history. If Augus didn't love Arlene, how could they have three kids together?
Augus was still coughing, his eyes lifeless as they stared out the window, as if in the span of mere moments, he had been drained totally.
"Beck, you’ll do the digging about your sister. If by some miracle she's alive, then I'm leaving her the entire Sanders family fortune. I want her to live out her days without a worry; I want her." he started coughing again.
"Dad, calm down, please."
Augus looked up at him, "You don't resent?"
The boys wouldn't get a share of the stock, only other assets. Traditionally, daughters were seen as less valuable, raised in these wealthy families mostly for strategic marriages.
Now he was leaving everything to someone who might not even be alive. How could Beck not feel bitter?
"I don't, not at all. I just want you to get better, and for sis to be okay. But you know as well as I do, the chances of her being alive are slim."
"You need to find Ian. He mentioned Phelps was up to no good. Despite my trust in Dr. Herrington, I hope he's crooked. Because if he is, the paternity test he provided could be false, and my daughter might have a chance at life."
Beck patted his back reassuringly.
"Okay, I'll go see him right away."
A sense of relief washed over Augus, even as his mouth was filled with the taste of blood.
Beck was about to offer further comfort when his phone rang. It was Dylan. He answered, and Dylan's voice came through.
"Beck, Judith's not gonna make it. She wants to see our dad before she goes."
Beck's pupils shook drastically, "She's not gonna make it?"
Dylan leaned against the wall in the hospital corridor, relaying the doctor's grim prognosis. Judith herself had no desire to keep fighting; she just kept asking to see Augus one last time.
"That's not your sister. She might be the very reason your real sister is dead."
Just as he finished speaking, the door burst open, and Arlene dropped to her knees at the threshold.
"Honey, please see Judith. I beg you. She's been with me all these years. If you don't, I'll end it all!"
She pulled out a dagger, pressing it to her throat.
Augus's face turned ashen, knowing there were still things about Arlene he needed to investigate.
Over the years, she hadn't slipped up, and hadn't even been in contact with anyone suspicious. How she had switched places with Cynthia, and how many times it had happened, remained a mystery.
Arlene couldn't die.
"I'll see her."
