As the hammering sounds pierced the silence, Maja bolted upright in her bed.
A section of the wall was being chiseled away, and before she knew it, a door-sized gap had been created. Workers busied themselves fitting an actual door in the opening.
Through this new doorway, Maja caught a glimpse of the adjacent space.
It was like a laboratory, cluttered with jars and bottles of all sorts.
And there stood Patrick, clad in a white lab coat with safety goggles perched on his nose, the very image of a rogue scholar.
Once the workers had cleared out, Maja approached cautiously, watching him warily.
"Are you Patrick, or are you Eric?"
Eric was a prodigy in pharmacology, who conducted experiments with the leading minds at the institute when he was just a teenager. But Patrick was merely a secondary personality, a persona without the knowledge of drug formulation.
Unless.
He had somehow regained all of Eric’s memories.
But was that even possible?
If Patrick was just a secondary personality, then Eric should be the dominant one.
There was no reason for Patrick to overpower Eric and take over the body.
Patrick ignored her, fixated on the test tube in his hand.
Maja stepped closer, watching him weigh and mix several substances together. She was now sure that Patrick had indeed accessed Eric's memories.
"Do you have all of his memories, or just parts of them?"
As soon as the words left her mouth, Patrick crushed the test tube in his hand.
"Do you need me to silence you with poison to keep you quiet?"
Emma took a step back, but in the next second, Patrick’s hand was clamping her chin.
"Maja, here, you play by my rules. You do what I say. If you make me unhappy, I assure you..."
His gaze roamed over her as he spoke.
"I'll make sure you're just as unhappy."
Maja felt she was violated by his stare, and a wave of revulsion washed over her.
Patrick tightened his grip, "Waiting for Ian to rescue you? Forget it. I’ll make sure he's stuck on Forbidden Island forever."
Maja struggled, hearing him add another threat.
With a burst of adrenaline, she flung a bottle of shampoo at him, striking him on the head.
It didn't hurt, but the insult was clear.
Patrick touched his head, and gave out a cold laugh.
"Hope you've still got that energy to talk to me later."
Maja paled, and touched her belly with her trembling hands.
Patrick turned casually, and returned to his experiments.
Maja followed, her voice hoarse with desperation.
"Please, don't hurt the child."
Patrick was unmoved, his eyes hidden behind the goggles, with a cold and detached demeanor.
"Patrick, what do you want? What do I need to do for you to spare my child?"
With a crash, he hurled a beaker to the floor, and the shattering glass narrowly missed her.
"Spare your child? You think you have the right to ask me for anything, Maja? I wish you and Ian were both dead."
