Standing by her side, the woman seemed to see through her thought, and gave her shoulder a reassuring pat.

"I want to join you. I got word of my brother's whereabouts there, and I'm certain he's in that place."

But at that moment, one of Ian's men intervened.

"Ms. Pennyfeather, the boss wants you to stay put for now."

No sooner had he spoken than his phone began to blare with an urgent call. His pupils contracted sharply, and he immediately got in touch with the North American underground combat pit, as well as the Moore, Sanders, and even the Olson families.

Maja noticed the change in his expression and quickly grabbed his sleeve.

"What is it? Is there news about Ian?"

"Yes. The research base where the boss is, it's right at the epicenter of the earthquake. We need all hands on deck to help. There’s not just the quake and landslides; it seems they're under attack too. Ms. Pennyfeather, I need to go assist. Please, stay safe at the hotel."

But Maja couldn't stand the thought of waiting idly. As she watched the group pile into their vehicles and drive off, she turned to the woman beside her, "We'll take a motorcycle there."

The woman's gaze, however, lingered on Maja's stomach. Maja was naturally slender, and at two months pregnant, she wasn't showing yet. But being pregnant meant she wasn't like everyone else.

She hurried down the steps, urgency in her voice, "I'm fine; I have to see for myself, or I won't have peace of mind."

The woman hurried after her, "If you're set on going, I’ll protect you."

Maja glanced back at her, "By the way, I never got your name."

"No name. After being thrown into the combat pit and making it out, I just got hired on. My parents called me Nana."

"Nana?"

"Yeah."

But the motorcycle ignored them, charging forward and went inside.

The people, busy with the barriers, watched as they rode away, confusion in their eyes. Most people inside were desperate to leave the area, yet here were two charging in.

Had they not received the order? Anyone entering the zone was not allowed to leave. The place had become a one-way gate to hell; to enter was to court death.

But they didn't dwell on it for long, promptly erecting the electrically charged barriers that could kill at a touch. Not far off, armed guards stood watch, ready to shoot anyone trying to escape from within.

An hour later, as the motorcycle's fuel gauge neared empty, Maja and Nana finally caught sight of the devastation.

Seeing was the only path to believing. The mountain here had collapsed, its trees uprooted. Torrents of water cascaded from the heights, relentless. The remains of houses peeked out, buried under layers of earth and debris.

Maja's pupils contracted in horror, her body going numb.

Nature's fury was terrifying, the roaring flood stretching into the distance before stopping, its banks lined with bodies clad in tattered protective suits.
