lan plonked himself down at the desk nearby and dove back into his paperwork. 

“Need something?” 

“Herbert has a painting up for auction soon, and you seemed to fancy his work before. If you’re planning to go, could you take me with you?” 

Carlene sounded a little flirtatious as she eyed the food on the table and slowly took a seat. 

“I haven’t eaten yet, mind if you join me?” 

lan’s gaze remained glued to his documents. 

“We can discuss that later.” 

“lan, I remember you were really into Herbert’s style back in the day. I even went out of my way to learn from him, but he’s not taking on new students anymore. His last student was apparently a young guy: 

Carlene seemed a bit miffed. “I bet it’s one of his relatives or something.” 

lan’s brow furrowed slightly. “Carlene, I have work to do.” 

Ever since Carlene had arrived, she had had a hunch that something was off about the place. It was her feminine intuition kicking in. 

“lan, I don’t think anyone cleaned the room this morning.” 

She planned to check the bedroom, but lan didn’t respond. 

When Carlene opened the bedroom door, she spotted two pillows on the bed. If there was only one person sleeping, the other pillow should have been put away. 

Her eyebrows knitted together in worry. She headed straight for the closet. 

Meanwhile/poor Maja in the closet, got her heart pounding when she heard the clicking of high heels. She braced herself for the worst. 

Given Carlene’s fondness for lan, if she was discovered, she’d be in deep trouble. 

Just as Carlene was about to open the closet door, lan appeared in the doorway, his arms folded across his chest and said in a matter–of–fact tone, “I’m a neat freak.” 

He didn’t like people touching his stuff. 

Suddenly, Carlene realized she’d barged into his bedroom! 

She quickly pulled her hand back and gave him a smile. 

“I was just thinking of buying you some ties. Wanted to see what kind of suits you usually wear.” 

lan didn’t call her out but returned to the living room. 

Carlene had no choice but to follow him, her face had a shade of embarrassment. 

Maja let out a sigh of relief when she heard the footsteps fading. 

Back in the living room, Carlene’s voice was low. 

“lan, I know you wouldn’t go for other women.” 

lan settled back into his chair, pen back in hand, burying himself in the documents. 

Carlene was worried that he was mad, and her unease grew when she saw the food cart nearby. 

“I should get going. If you’re attending the auction, I can be your plus one.” 

“Mmm.” 

lan’s gaze didn’t leave his papers. 

Carlene watched lan, heartbroken, and begrudgingly headed for the door. 

lan’s voice trailed from behind her. 

“Return the room card.” 

Carlene’s face crumpled in embarrassment. Since everyone thought she and lan were tying the knot, she had the upper hand. 

When she’d asked the lobby manager for the room card, he’d handed it over without a fuss. 

lan’s words were clearly a sign of his discontent with her actions. 

She opened and closed her mouth, feeling awkward, and bit her lip. 

“Got it.” 

As she left the room, her eyes were filled with anger and disappointment. 

Recalling the long hair she’d found in his room last time, she was certain lan had another girlfriend. 

Who could it be? Penny? 

She immediately called the surveillance room, but all information about lan was kept confidential by the hotel. 

Carlene was fuming, her face red. After returning the room card, she waited downstairs. 

She was determined to see who the shameless woman was sleeping in his bed! 

Back in the room. 

lan stood up and headed for the bedroom. 

The room was simply decorated with a custom European bed and a row of cabinets. 

It reeked of understated luxury. 

He opened the closet door and saw several tidy suits hanging, with a pretty lady sitting underneath. 

He squatted down and their eyes met. 

Maja was shoeless as she had kicked her shoes under the bed in a hurry when she came in. 

She was curled up in a ball, wearing nothing but a shirt. 

The closet was filled with her scent, not of perfume, but of the shower gel she frequently used. 

He was used to the scent and had never thought of it as anything special. 

But at that moment, staring into her panicked eyes, he found the scent incredibly alluring. 

Just as Maja was about to get out, the next second, she was pushed deeper into the closet and was met with a passionate kiss. 

In this tight space, she was trapped.
