Leaning against the wall, Maja weakly asked, “Has Laura been in contact with anyone recently?” 

“We’re not sure.” 

Maja dialed the police again, who gave her a phone number. 

It was Carlene’s number.

She was reeling from the pain. 

She didn’t feel like going back. She curled up in the hospital corridor, spent the night there, and washed her face with cold water in the bathroom when she woke up. Then she began to prepare for Neil’s funeral.
