Everyone felt super awkward. How could they just leave lan alone here? But lan just raised his hand and glanced at his wristwatch. “Come back when the quake monitoring team tells ya it’s safe.” 

“But, sir.” 

lan had already started walking down the road. The rest could only hold onto Coco and one by one grab the ropes dropped from the chopper. 

When Maja woke up, all she could hear was the sound of water dripping, drip drop drip drop. It was especially clear in the silence. She tried to move, but the cave was too dark and there seemed to be a lack of oxygen. 

She coughed twice and noticed that the echo here was pretty loud. Where was this? 

She couldn’t see anything, but she knew she was in a cave and there were cameras around. She tried to walk but almost fell because of her injured foot. 

Suddenly, a mechanical voice asked, “Where’s the stuff Patric gave you? If you don’t tell me, I’ll leave you here forever.” 

The voice came from the direction of the camera. It was probably the person who brought her here. 

Maja had survived in worse conditions, with snakes and centipedes, but here it was just darkness, at least there weren’t any creepy crawlies. So, she didn’t get scared, she started feeling around the walls for an exit. But it was an enclosed space, no doors anywhere. 

The voice asked again, Where’s the thing? It’s not at RosenGarden. Is it at Rosewood Manor? Or have you hidden it somewhere else?” 

Maja suddenly remembered the surveillance at RosenGarden, and a chill ran down her spine. Was it this guy? But she still didn’t know what this man looked like. 

“Who are you?” 

The man didn’t answer. The voice disappeared, and everything went quiet again. 

Maja knocked on every surface she could reach, but she got nothing, all the walls seemed solid, no way out. 

She looked up, and everything was pitch black. If the way wasn’t on the sides or below, then it had to be above. 

Was this some kind of pit? No wonder she was having trouble breathing. 

She got tired of searching and just sat down somewhere, wondering if this guy really intended to keep her here. After who knew how long, she heard the man’s voice again. “There’ll be a quake in half an hour, estimated 6.5 magnitude. If you keep silent, you’ll die here.” 

Maja swallowed hard, just as she was about to speak, she heard some static in the speaker, then lan’s voice. 

“Maja?” 

“Maja!” 

Maja’s eyes widened in disbelief. lan?

She shouted at the red light of the surveillance camera in the dark, not sure if lan could hear. 

In front of the surveillance room, the man was gone. Ian’s voice was coming from outside. He didn’t realize this was a door. As all around were identical long corridors, the so–called door was hidden. 

After entering the mountain, he realized that this place was full of secrets. It was in an area prone to earthquakes and rarely visited. These tunnels, after being dug out, were used for other purposes. Maja was sure she just heard lan’s voice, but the walls were very slippery, and she couldn’t climb out of this nearly four–meter–high pit. 

lan was standing in the corridor. Even though they were close in a straight line, these corridors were like a maze, winding, making it sound like Maja’s voice was coming from the opposite direction when he heard it. He started running, ran a few hundred meters, and nearly fell off the middle of the mountain. There was a visible door here, but when one of the doors was opened.
