ATHENA

The Loud sound of an ambulance reaches my ears as I step out of the hospital. My shift just ended and I'm beat.

It's only been a few days and I still can't get Alex's gaze out of my mind. The way he looked at Zayan when he kissed my cheek made my heart stop and I hate that even after what he's done to me he's still able to get a rise out of me.

I'm pulling out my phone when the ambulance parks and Alex steps out and my heart drops to my stomach.

Is it….

No.. God no!

I watch in slow motion as the paramedics rush out, the first thought that hits me is Nana and I can barely breathe.

Slowly, I drag my legs forward as I tune every sound out the only thing I can now hear is the blood rushing to my ears.

But I halt when Leah jumps out and then I see the small oxygen mask. The tiny limbs.

The panic painted all over Alex’s face.

Rayen.

What happened?

My God please let him be okay, Alex won't survive this pain a second time.

Ian comes flying through the ER doors, already pulling gloves on. “Bring him to Trauma 1. Now!”

The doors burst open and Rayen is wheeled inside, his tiny body limp, hooked up to an oxygen tank. His skin is red and angry. His lips are slightly blue.

I feel sick.

“His airway’s compromised. We need to intubate,” Ian barks, but there’s a hesitation in his eyes as he glances toward me like he knows how badly this is affecting me.

“Get the three of them out of here!” He barks the orders and before we know what's going on, doors are being shut in our faces although no one dares to touch Alex, his anger is enough to keep one at a distance.

Leah paces back and forth with her hand between her teeth.

“That stupid woman should be jailed for this! Everyone knows Rayen is allergic to peanuts.” Her face is red in anger and her eyes are full of fear.

Unable to find the right words, I turn to leave so I can give them some room but Alex stops me,

“Stay.” He commands.

“Why is she staying? This is a family matter!” Leah fumes.

“Because I said so,” he bites out, his voice like ice and fire at once.

Leah glares at me, her chest rising and falling with fury. “You’re not thinking straight.” She turns to face him again, “She has no reason to be here!”

Alex turns and I hold my breath.

The room seems to freeze. Every second that passes feels heavier, the air growing colder, suffocating.

His green eyes harden into something I wouldn't dare to name and Leah knows she has crossed the line because she not only shuts up, she sits down too.

I feel my heart beating so fast I swear I can see stars. I don't know what happened, but I'm praying he will survive.

“Someone gave him cookies made with fucking peanut. “ He growls as if to answer my question.

“He will be okay. I'm also allergic to peanut but I've survived several attacks and Rayen is your son, which means he has blood of a fighter.” I whisper the last words to him.

I hate Alex.

Alex has been in the worst mood these past days and no one wants to cross paths with him for fear of life being sucked out of you.

Security is so tight. Four guards are always outside his room on rotation 24/7.

“Uhm…Daddy has stepped out okay, let me call your mom. She’ll want to help you with that.”

His face falls slightly, a frown tugging at his lips as he shakes his head. “Can you bathe me then?”

I doubt Leah will appreciate that very much.

“Please?” Rayen’s voice is almost pleading, his gaze wide, trust radiating from his little eyes.

The quiet desperation in his tone hits me like a wave, and before I realize it, I nod, feeling the weight of the moment.

“Okay, big guy. Let’s get you cleaned up.”

He smiles but it's still weak and it breaks my heart.

I walk to his private bathroom and start his bath while I gently start to undress him.

When his little body is bare, I reach for a towel to cover him when my hands halt.

There, just beneath his ribcage, is a birthmark. The same shape, the same size, the exact same place as the one I’ve always had, the one on my own side.

It’s a strange sensation, seeing that mark on him. My mind goes blank for a split second, my thoughts spinning in a haze of confusion and disbelief.

Could it be?

"Rayen," I say, my voice barely a whisper as my hand hovers above the mark. “This... this is the same as mine.”

“Really? We even have the same hair colour!” Ryan adds to my shock, making my heart stop.
