Chapter 5

Before Antonio could react, I turned to leave and soon disappeared into the crowd.

For a second, he suddenly felt a part of him missing as if someone had forcibly torn it away.

The last time he felt this way was when Grace signed the divorce papers.

As he recalled her demeanor these past few days, he felt more and more uneasy.

She had never made a scene; she just observed the whole thing calmly like an outsider.

But that wasn’t how she had been a while back. Back then, she snuggled in his arms, complaining coquettishly that he had always been busy, so busy that he missed her birthday.

At first, he thought she’d make a big scene after he proposed the temporary divorce.

He was even prepared to take a certain amount of time to soothe her.

But he was wrong. She simply signed her name calmly.

For a second, he hoped she’d tear apart the agreement and throw a tantrum.

He had the urge to take her away while leaving everything behind; but in the end, he stopped himself from doing so.

He figured it was fine because she loved him. And of course, she’d understand doing this wasn’t his intention. It was just a temporary solution, and after things calmed down, he’d make it up to her by being ever better to her.

But Sienna couldn’t be harmed no matter what.

He wouldn’t let Sienna be hurt by anyone. Back then, when the car was out of control, it was Milton who shielded him from danger; Milton died for him.

Without Milton, he would have been dead by now.

On his deathbed, Milton clutched his hand while murmuring Sienna’s name. He vowed that he’d take care of Sienna, and he didn’t want to break his promise to Milton.

Once, Arnold had asked him, “If Grace and Sienna were kidnapped at the same time, and you could only save one, who would you choose?”

He laughed at the question, finding it absurd.

He’d save Sienna and die together with Grace.

Hearing his answer, Arnold smiled a bit helplessly and pressed on, “Has it ever crossed your mind that maybe Grace didn’t want to die?

“Antonio, it’s not fair that you sacrifice Grace just because she loves you. Loving someone can be exhausting sometimes.”

That day, he didn’t take Arnold’s words seriously.

He even thought that Grace was supposed to love him forever.

Little did he know that the horrible mistake he made that day had, almost imperceptibly, turned into a sharp dagger, stabbing mercilessly at his heart and leaving him suffocating.

At night, Antonio drove back to the mountain manor.

Since marrying him, Grace had moved her studio to one of the villas in the manor.

She had shown a unique aesthetic taste for art since she was little and began to make a name for herself in the sculpture field in her college days.

No one had ever doubted that she was a rising star; as it turned out, they were right about her.

But after she married him, something was missing in her work. Her skills were as outstanding as always, but her work no

longer amazed people at first sight.

Her mentor advised that she should leave the status quo to get her feelings and mindset back.

But later, she seldom sculptured again.

Antonio pushed open the door to Grace’s studio.

He was stunned by the sight of the lifelike heart on the worktable.

The heart was full of holes; not a single part of it was intact.

As Bridget came to clean, she turned on the light and saw Antonio standing next to the work table.

Surprised, she asked, “Mr. Kaufman, what are you doing here?”
