Chloe texted back almost right away.

But her reply was only two words.

She didn’t ask any follow-up questions. She didn’t call. That caught Connor off guard.

He’d booked a room at the same hotel, but he wasn’t on the same floor as Chloe and the others.

He headed to his room first, took a shower, changed into clean clothes, and then made his way over to Chloe’s room.

Standing outside her door, Connor felt completely different from how he’d felt yesterday. All the happiness and excitement were still there, but now they were tangled up with nerves he couldn’t quite shake.

He knew exactly who was on the other side of this door. No more guessing, no more doubts. It was Chloe. The woman he’d been searching for—thinking about every single night.

After a moment, he managed to steady himself, lifted his hand, and knocked.

The door opened almost immediately.

Chloe stood there. She didn’t look surprised to see him.

She greeted him with a polite, almost distant smile. “Mr. Connor, Tim’s awake.”

Connor tried to keep things casual, explaining, “I stayed up talking with Mr. Lucas last night, but he got a call from work and had to leave all of a sudden. I, uh, ended up drinking too much. Sorry about that—Tim must’ve been a handful.”

Chloe, with her memories gone, seemed so open and trusting. She didn’t ask for details, just replied with a polite nod. “It’s alright. Tim slept really well. He’s in the bathroom getting ready.”

She stepped aside to let Connor in. “Come in, Mr. Connor.”

He watched Tim’s bright, carefree grin and felt a sharp pang of guilt. For two years, he hadn’t really been able to move on, and he’d missed what Tim needed. He hadn’t been the dad Tim deserved.

Tim spotted him and his face lit up. “Daddy!”

He ran over, full of energy. “Daddy, I slept with Aaron last night!”

Connor smiled and ruffled his hair. “Did you have a good time?”

Tim nodded so hard his hair bounced. “Yeah! Aaron’s awesome.”

Chloe walked over to them, and Tim darted to her, wrapping his arms around her waist. “Mommy, hug me!”

Chloe’s smile faltered, just for a second. She gently tried to correct him again, “Tim, I’m really not your mommy.”

But Tim didn’t want to hear it. His eyes filled with tears in an instant. “Mommy, do you not want me anymore?”
