Chloe went still.

She stared at the man in front of her, completely thrown off guard.

Before she could say a word, Connor pulled her into a tight embrace.

“Chloe, you can forget everything else, but how could you forget me?”

Connor had always thought of himself as a rational guy. Especially after running into Chloe again. He’d spent hours thinking things through, weighing every option. After talking with Lucas, he finally made a choice: he wouldn’t tell Chloe the truth—not yet. He was scared. Scared that if Chloe knew, she’d choose her comfortable, ordinary life over him. So, he wanted to take it slow, slip quietly back into her world, hoping her memories would come back on their own.

But after just two days with her, listening to her talk about her happy little family, how perfect her life was—he just couldn’t take it anymore.

He broke down, clutching Chloe and crying like he hadn’t in years.

Chloe’s whole body tensed up. She stood there, stiff as a board, letting him hold her. Her hands hung awkwardly in the air, unsure what to do.

This wasn’t the first time he’d hugged her. Honestly, it should have felt wrong, way out of line. But instead of feeling angry or violated, Chloe felt her heart twist. Seeing him so devastated, so utterly lost, made something inside her ache.

She didn’t know why his pain cut so deep, like it was her own.

She didn’t want to push him away. In fact, some part of her wanted to hold him back, to comfort him, to never let go.

But in the end, reason beat out emotion.

“Mr. Connor, what do you mean? What are you talking about—my life being some kind of carefully woven prison?” Chloe’s voice was steady, but her mind was racing.

She’d sensed something wasn’t right for a while now. But she couldn’t figure out what connected her to this man. From her point of view, Grayson and Aaron were the people she trusted most in the world. There was no way she could just start doubting them, not without a reason.

Still, confusion gnawed at her, mixing with a curiosity she couldn’t shake.

Connor was still holding her. His voice was rough, trembling, like he’d finally decided to come clean.

She turned to Connor, her voice tight. “He’s really warm. It must be over 102.”

Without a second thought, Connor scooped Timmy into his arms and started getting him changed. “I’m taking him to the hospital.”

Chloe jumped into action. “I’m coming, too.”

They were out the door in minutes, racing to the hospital.

After a round of tests, the diagnosis was clear: acute viral infection. And it was serious—his numbers were way too high. He needed an IV right away.

Maybe it was the fever, but Timmy was miserable. He cried and fussed, impossible to calm down. Even Connor couldn’t soothe him. Timmy just wanted his mom.

Finally, he fell asleep in Chloe’s arms, his little hand wrapped around the IV.

The four of them spent the whole night in the hospital infusion room. Aaron curled up on the couch, falling asleep and waking up every so often to check on his little brother, always worried and always so thoughtful.
