Chloe looked around, taking in every detail.

Yep, this was definitely a water dungeon. Above the shallow pool, an iron cage dangled from the ceiling—clearly meant for holding people prisoner. Right now, it was empty.

“Maddie said the whole point was to lure us here so Grant could trap us. You think this dungeon was set up for us?” Chloe asked, her voice low.

Somehow, without even realizing it, she and Connor had started to move in sync. She always seemed to know what he was thinking.

Connor frowned, lost in thought. He’d spent last night digging into Amelia’s whereabouts and medical records for the past six months. She’d bounced between every major hospital in Eldridge City, and there were even records of her getting treatment in the US. If that was all just a setup to mislead them, the lengths she’d gone to were insane.

Plus, six months ago, Chloe hadn’t even been found yet. How could Amelia have known to set all this in motion so early?

Chloe could read the frustration and uncertainty in Connor’s eyes. For the first time, she reached out and squeezed his hand. “Don’t worry. We’re going to get through this. I know my brother—he’ll find us, no matter what.”

Connor glanced down at their joined hands, guilt flickering across his face. “I’m sorry. You just got back, and now you’re in danger again because of me.”

Chloe shook her head. “Don’t say that. We’re married—we’re a team. If Grant planned this, it was only a matter of time. At least we’re together.”

They took a moment to comfort each other, then started inspecting the dungeon.

It wasn’t very big. The walls were built from rough stone, now covered in thick, dark green moss. Water seeped from the cracks, dripping steadily into the pool below. The water was shallow, just covering their ankles for now.

Above it, the iron cage was hooked to a waterwheel. Chloe could picture it too easily: if someone was locked inside and the wheel turned, the cage would slowly sink into the water. It was a brutal kind of torture.
