Chloe pushed herself up, taking in the empty stretch of wilderness around them. “Where are we?”

Connor scanned the landscape, recognition dawning on his face. He pointed to a faint light glowing in the distance. “That’s Gracehill Abbey.”

Chloe knew the name. Gracehill Abbey was one of Eldridge City’s oldest temples, way up at the top of a mountain. Getting there meant a tough climb, so it was never exactly crowded.

She glanced around uncertainly. Her sense of direction was pretty hopeless, and she’d never been out here before. “So… what do we do now?”

“We’re not far from the old Sartori estate,” Connor said. “Let’s walk back.”

By the time they made it to the mansion, the sky was fading into twilight and the air had cooled. Their clothes, soaked through not long ago, were now mostly dry.

The butler nearly dropped the tray he was carrying when he saw them. It had been two years since the young mistress vanished—now here she was, showing up out of nowhere with the young master. Both of them looked like they’d survived a storm.

Rushing over, the butler’s face was etched with worry. “Sir, what happened to you two?”

Connor just said, “Could you get us something to eat?”

Without another word, he and Chloe headed upstairs to clean up.

Connor couldn’t help noticing how easily Chloe moved through the halls, as if she’d never left. She went straight to the master bedroom, then to her own closet without missing a beat, grabbed some fresh clothes, and disappeared into the bathroom.

A few minutes later, Chloe came out, toweling her hair dry. Connor was waiting by the door, looking like he’d been standing there the whole time.

“You should go take a hot shower,” Chloe said, rubbing the towel over her hair.

Connor frowned. Something had felt off for a while—ever since Chloe kissed him in the basement. After that, she’d been sharp and decisive, almost like a different person.
