He’d never felt regret like this before—not until now.

“Aaron, from now on, Uncle Connor will be your dad. He’ll do a much better job than I ever could. Go ahead, hate me, blame me. Honestly, it might be better if you just forgot about me.”

He stood up and walked away without looking back.

Summer watched him go, his figure disappearing into the night, and finally let her own tears fall. She dropped her head and whispered, “I won’t hate you. You’ll always be my dad.”

A few minutes later, Connor rolled over in his wheelchair, Chloe quietly by his side. They’d seen everything.

Connor talked for a long time, and Summer listened, quiet and thoughtful.
