Cassie sat up, lighting a slim cigarette as her first order of business. Casually, she lit another for Winston and handed it over.

Winston frowned at the gesture. "I don't smoke," he said.

Cassie shrugged, took back the cigarette, and inhaled deeply before releasing a swirling cloud of smoke. Feeling calmer, she leaned back and said, "Winston, we're like brothers, you know?"

Those words hit Winston like a ton of bricks, leaving a sting he couldn't ignore. But there was no turning back now. He wasn't about to chicken out. He turned to Cassie, his face a mix of seriousness and restraint. "Cassie, I like you."

Cassie's heart skipped a beat and then started pounding. Her ears reddened, but she kept her face neutral. "I'm a guy, and that's what you like?"

Winston's face went pale, and the usually composed man let slip a curse. "Damn it, I like guys."

Cassie's heart sank. Just as she thought. She scratched her head awkwardly. "Well, this is a bit of a pickle."

She liked Winston too. Cassie was always straightforward, and as soon as she realized her feelings, she decided she was going to win him over. But Winston was only interested in her "male" persona. If he found out she was actually a woman, it'd be game over.

She gazed at Winston's refined, almost aloof face. He'd regained his cool, like he was back in his office, focused and composed, carving wood with precision. That quiet, restrained aura was downright captivating.

Winston took a while to process. "What did you say?"

Cassie stood up, walked over, and with a hint of impatience, said, "Quit stalling. Are you in or not?"

Her impatience was really just covering up her shyness. She'd never felt shy in her life, and it was a bit embarrassing. Seeing Winston's confused look, she added, "If you're not in, let's just forget it."

"I’m in, I’m in," Winston blurted out.
