Chloe was surprised: "Kent has a thing for your older sister?"

Connor nodded: "Yeah, just a crush from back in the day. But beyond that, he’s backing the marriage because he knows Pax is set to lead the Gilbert family one day. Kent's no fool; he never makes a move without thinking of the gains."

Chloe sighed: "They've thought of everything – the perks, the connections, the future – but not how the bride and groom feel. When people become mere pawns of profit, where's the joy in life?"

Chloe felt genuinely sorry for them both. Even though Eve could be a bit much, she wasn't the type to play dirty games. Chloe didn’t have anything against her. As for Pax, Chloe's heart ached for him.

While they chatted, a commotion erupted at the entrance. Someone was being blocked from coming in, and they were making quite the scene.

"Claire, what’s your deal? The boy’s not just yours! How could you not tell us, the Gilbert family, about this big engagement?"

"Claire, get out here!"

Connor frowned: "Sounds like Desmond."

Desmond? Claire's ex, and the father of Pax and Diana, who were half-siblings. Chloe’s curiosity was piqued. "Let's go see."

Seeing Claire’s demeanor, Desmond felt a twinge of intimidation. This woman, when calm, was all class from a high-society family. But when she snapped, she was utterly unpredictable. He wouldn’t have dared to face her before.
