Claire's voice was icy cold. "Connor, how can someone as filthy as you even think you're worth anything?"

Connor lay flat on the floor, his fingers clenched tight. Slowly, he got to his feet. "Even if I offer my life, it's not enough?"

Claire slammed her coffee cup down on the table with a thud. "Your pathetic life means nothing to me, less than a stray dog."

Connor's grip tightened, and the veins at his temples throbbed. He knew Claire had always seen him this way, but hearing it still felt like a dagger to his heart.
