Thea’s hand rested softly on his chest, as she cudded up to him with a birdlike gentleness.

She had never shown this kind of dependence before.

Nicolas‘ movements were gentle, careful not to hurt Thea in his arms.

Neither spoke, but Jake could read Nicolas‘ eyes all too clearly, a comprehension between men.

A deep sense of dread and anger set in, and Jake, feeling unsettled, followed after them and watched the two disappear into

the same room.

Instantly, he felt betrayed by Thea and furious, rushing forward to try and kick down the door.

Feeling morally justified, he surged with newfound strength.

Just before his foot connected with the door, the bodyguard standing at the entrance shot him a cold, warning glance.

Jake shrank back, feeling small, like a quail.

Nicolas stepped out.

He didn’t look surprised to see Jake waiting, and his expression was as cold as usual when looking at Jake, with a hint of disdain.

“Is there a problem?” he asked, hands in his pockets.

Nicolas, who wasn’t wearing a suit jacket, was half a head taller than Jake, with broad shoulders and a trim waist. His shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal muscular, sinewy forearms, which only made Jake look thinner by comparison.

Jake’s gaze dropped for a moment before he gathered himself, red–eyed, and demanded, “What’s the meaning of this? Thea is my girlfriend, Uncle Nicolas. Even if you wanted to get involved, this is too much!”

Nicolas gave a derisive laugh, almost a scoff. “Her, your girlfriend? Didn’t you two break up some time ago? As I recall, Dad mentioned you and Miss Terell are getting married. Congratulations.”

That was hitting a sore spot in Jake’s heart. Jake’s fists clenched immediately; his back teeth grinding.

Nearly roaring, he said, “Madelyn and I won’t be getting married My wife will only be Thea, and she’s going to marry me. You should stay away from her!”

“Ouch!” As soon as the words left his mouth, Jake took a hard punch to the head.

He could barely stay on his feet, staggering and bracing himself against the wall.
