Eventually, 1 illuminated my path.
But it was a road filled with ruggedness and pitfalls, reeking of discomfort and
despair.
The remnants of affection were not enough to keep me moving forward, nor did they offer any warmth. They only made it painfully clear just how unbearable this marriage had become.
“I used to think that maybe your strong sense of morality made it difficult for you to accept loving anyone other than Vanessa.”
“Then I wondered, if your morals were really that strong, how could you still flirt with your ex–girlfriend after you had a wife?”
“Honestly, you’re just selfish.”
“You even had to use Aaron as an excuse to reconcile with me.”
“But, Charles, we’ve been divorced for four years.”
Charles Evans swallows hard, his voice hoarse as he asks, “So, I’m too late, right?”
“It’s not that you’re too late.” I sigh softly. “It’s just that all of that is in the past.”
“It’s something that can’t be undone; let’s look forward.”
Charles raises his hand to cover his
eyes.
I understand his pride.
Seeing him like this doesn’t bring me any satisfaction.

I quietly stand up, leaving this little space for him.
Before I leave, he reaches out and tugs at the hem of my dress.
He grips it tightly, his knuckles white and veins bulging.
