I took Danny upstairs and pressed the doorbell.

Frank opened the door with a chilling demeanor. His usually expressive eyes were devoid of warmth, and his voice was lazy and indifferent. “Charlotte, aren’t you tired of putting on this act?”

“I said, you’re playing the part of someone who’s quite fond of me,” 

Frank tugged at his lip and glanced down at Danny with scorn. “And you’re ‘dedicatedly taking care of my nephew. Aren’t you tired of this show of superficial effort?” 

I was stunned, my nails digging into my palms, feeling a long–forgotten pain. “What do you mean…” “Uncle!” Danny, always perceptive, immediately glared at Frank, his eyes reddening with anger. “What nonsense are you talking about! Aunt is very good to me, really good! You’re not allowed to bully her!” 

“Come here.” Frank grabbed Danny by the back of his shirt and pulled him into the house, sneering. “Don’t call her Aunt anymore. Before you call someone that, you should ask if they’re willing to be your aunt!”
