It was only after Courtney had left that Estelle started to let her guard down. 

In a situation where time had changed and people had moved on, encountering familiar faces can be one of the most intimidating experiences. They would always unintentionally bring up past events, which could be super awkward. 

Jonathan poured her some water, “Did that make you uncomfortable?” 

Estelle looked up, “No.” 

She paused briefly before asking, “Where’s my gun?” 

Jonathan frowned slightly, “You’re so attached to your gun, why haven’t you called to ask for it these past few days?” 

Estelle didn’t answer. 

“So,” Jonathan looked deeply into her eyes, “You actually feel secure about leaving your gun with me, don’t you?” 

Estelle’s heart skipped a beat, understanding the implications of his words. The fact that she entrusted him with her most secretive and least-wanted-to-be-seen item without any concern suggested… 

She met his gaze without hesitation and slowly said, “I think, Mr. Lamont isn’t that much of a jerk, right?” 

Jonathan raised an eyebrow “Am I a jerk?” 

Still furrowing his brows, he seemed a bit confused, “I’ve only ever loved one person, never cheated, never strayed. How am I a jerk?” 

Estelle took a sharp breath, gritted her teeth in secret, and forced out a smile, “Mr. Lamont isn’t a jerk, but it’s a pity that the person you like doesn’t like you anymore.” 

Jonathan’s eyes darkened, “Whether she likes me or not, she might not even know herself. Even if she doesn’t, I’ll make her like me again.” 

Estelle snorted, “Mr. Lamont, don’t be so arrogant.” 

Jonathan smiled, “I never fail to get what I want.” 

“Well, you can try again this time!” 

Jonathan’s expression suddenly softened, “Would you like to give it a try with me?” 

Estelle choked up and couldn’t respond immediately. 

Just then, Courtney came in with the food, breaking the awkward silence in the room. 

“The tea is still brewing. It’ll be ready soon!” Courtney said cheerfully. 

Estelle already had a gentle smile on her face, “No rush.” 

Jonathan looked into her bright eyes and couldn’t help but smile. He felt a hint of helplessness, wondering when she would look at him like that again. For such a glance, he was willing to give it all. 

They started eating. Jonathan tried to keep her in a good mood, so he didn’t bring up the past. Instead, he changed the subject, “Is Emily’s mom feeling better?” 

Estelle nodded, “Yes.” 

She was indeed much better and could be discharged from the hospital in a few days.
