“I’m asking you one more time. Is there a problem you can’t solve?” Charlie’s voice was low and steady. 

Emily just shook her head, “No, nothing! 

Charlie’s expression softened, “Emily, have you ever trusted me?” 

She did trust him. In this world, the people she trusted most were her mom, Estelle, and him. 

But now, under his deep and piercing gaze, all she could do was lower her head and reply coolly, “I don’t understand what you’re getting at, Mr. James 

“Are you not trusting me?” Charlie finished, a self-mocking smile playing on his lips as he handed her the signed documents, “You can go now 

“Yes, sir.” Emily took the documents without lifting her head and turned to leave. 

Charlie watched her retreating figure, rubbing his eyebrows as a shadow fell over his handsome face. 

At dinner that evening. Shawn told Emily he had found a job. 

Emily looked up. “What kind of job?” 

“A friend introduced me. It’s a job as a chef in a company cafeteria. I’m going to give it a try tomorrow morning” Shawn grinned. “The company is in Wye District, but they provide staff accommodation, so I’ll be staying there most of the time.” 

Emily frowned slightly. “Which friend? Can we trust him?” 

“Harlan, we used to work together. He said it’s reliable.” Shawn took a bite of his steak and then looked up at Kya with a big grin, “Kya, I’m going to work tomorrow You must listen to Mommy at home” 

Kya enjoyed spending time with Shawn and was a bit reluctant to see him leave. She asked in her childish voice, “Grandpa, when will you come back?” 

“When I’ve earned some money” Shawn smiled affectionately. “Then I’ll come back and buy you some candy” 

Kya pursed her lips and nodded, “Can Mommy and I visit you?” 

Shawn hesitated for a moment before saying with a smile, “My work is far away, and you don’t know the way I will come back to visit you.” 

Kya grinned, “Mommy and I will wait for you.” 

“Alright, alright!” Shawn laughed and nodded. 

After dinner, Shawn played with Kya while Emily packed some clothes for him, 

She wasn’t sure about the conditions he would be living under, so she couldn’t help but put 100 dollars in Shawn’s pocket 

The next moming, Shawn got up early to prepare breakfast. He steamed some egg and ham muffins for Emily and made Kya’s favorite chicken soup. 

After breakfast, while Emily was washing dishes in the kitchen, Shawn approached her, his voice filled with guilt, “Emily, I haven’t been there for you these years. I don’t have the right to say anything, but it’s hard for you to raise Kya alone. If someone suitable comes along, consider it. It would lighten your burden. Mr. James, for example, seems like a good man.” 

Emily frowned, “When did you meet Charlie?”
