Lauryn’s face turned slightly pale.“You, how do you know? Even if you tell the Stark family now, no one will believe you!”

“Do you think I am you, who enjoys stirring up trouble everywhere?” Mariela’s eyes grew cold, and her voice was full of scorn. “What does your crush on Lennon have to do with me? After all, you are the nanny’s daughter and Rayne’s adopted daughter. Rayne would never tolerate you having such feelings towards Lennon.” 

Lauryn stood up in anger and exclaimed, “So what? For Lenny, I can spend my whole life without getting married! And you, you will never have any connection with him again!” 

Mariela’s heart skipped a beat, and a fleeting loneliness flashed across her eyes. 

“Well, then, I hope you will get what you want.” Mariela lowered her eyes to conceal her emotions and began to tidy up the things on her desk. 

“What do you want to do?” Lauryn asked. 

Mariela ignored her. 

She quickly stood up, opened the office door, and walked out.

Mariela gently knocked on the door. 

“Come in.” 

Mariela got straight to the point.“Mr. Casey, I want to resign.” 

Alan froze.“What’s going on? Why are you quitting on the first day back to work?” 

Last time, Mariela went on a business trip to Illinois with Alan. They casually made a bet and ended up winning the ten–year litigation and legal advisory contracts for BrightPath Group. In his eyes, Mariela was a lucky charm and a money tree. There was no way he would easily let her go. 

Mariela also didn’t hide anything and said straightforwardly, “Lauryn has personal animosity towards me, so I don’t accept working for her.” Non–independent lawyers in law firms may appear glamorous, but in reality, they were still employees working for the firm. 

For each case lawyers represented, the law firm would take a cut, and these cuts would ultimately be distributed as dividends to the partners and investors. 

So no matter how many cases Mariela handled, she was just an employee. 

She used to not care about these things. She came here to improve herself in the first place. But now it was different. Lauryn had become one of the bosses. From now on, every time Mariela handled a case, she would be working for Lauryn. And knowing Lauryn, she would cause trouble for her. 

She didn’t want to stay here and make herself unhappy. 

Alan was at a loss when he heard that Mariela had private resentment toward Lauryn.
