"Flora, if there's anything you're not comfortable with here, just holler. Honestly, with your skills, you could jump straight into being a mentor at the base!" Kruiz chuckled heartily.

Flora wasn’t interested. Being a mentor meant giving lectures.

"By the way, Flora, why don't you come work in my lab after your entrance test?" Kruiz rubbed his hands together, looking hopeful. "We’re pretty laid-back here. Come in whenever you like, and the food’s way better than at the base. We’re talking sweet and sour pork ribs, butter garlic prawns, steamed bass... whatever you fancy, I'll get it made for you! Plus, we’ve got milkshakes and desserts in the afternoons. How does that sound?"

Flora turned her head to see.

In the fading light of the sunset, a group of men had cornered a skinny boy against the wall. The boy kept his head down, silent, then suddenly, as if sensing her gaze, he looked over at her.

His eyes were lifeless.

Yet there was a strange, almost sinister hint of aggression, as if he was smiling.

But in an instant, it vanished, and the boy suddenly dashed towards Flora, hiding behind her.

"Sister, help me..."

His voice shook, as if truly frightened.
