Orla burst out laughing, almost in disbelief.
"Where does she get off, claiming she has it in spades? Even the medical bigwigs wouldn't dare say something like that. So, who does she think she is?"
"Some claims are so outlandish they'll twist your tongue. You say you've got a miracle cure? Then show us."
She was sure Flora wouldn't be able to back up her words. With Flora's temperament, if she had had the miracle cure all along, she wouldn't be standing here arguing. Orla thought Flora was being ridiculously foolish, spouting such an obvious lie.
"What's the matter? Can't produce it?" Orla taunted, not giving Flora time to respond.
Just as her words hung in the air, a red sports car zoomed toward her, aiming directly at her!
Orla stepped back in terror, but there was a step behind her, and she fell backward!
"Ah—"
Her back slammed hard against the concrete step, the pain so intense it brought tears to her eyes. The sports car screeched to a halt just at her feet. The door opened, and out stepped a woman in a red wrap dress, her figure striking, and she gave Orla a mocking glance.
In that instant, Orla realized she had been set up! This woman had done it on purpose, just to make her look ridiculous!
Crimson, strutting in sky-high heels with a confident sway, sauntered over to Flora. "Flora, darling," she purred.
She also nodded at Connor in greeting. "Where is it?"
"In the trunk," Flora replied.
A smile played on Flora's lips; her Connor was, indeed, very capable.
"No! There's no way these are the miracle cure! They must be fake! Flora, you're lying to everyone!" Orla watched as box after box of the miracle cure was unloaded from the trunk, completely dumbfounded.
No, it couldn't be! Mr. Atticus had stressed the importance of the miracle cure, saying it was nearly impossible to obtain unless you were from an influential family like those on Lone Island. Mr. Atticus had used all his cunning to secure just one dose. How could Flora suddenly produce several boxes of the miracle cure?
There was only one possibility: these were all fake!
Orla felt she had uncovered the truth but also realized her hysterical outburst had damaged her carefully cultivated image. Her eyes welled up, and she put on a wronged demeanor. "Flora, why would you deceive everyone like this? The boxes don't contain the miracle cure. Don't you realize you're putting Shawn's life in danger?"
"Lady, take a look at yourself. Calling someone else 'sister'? You're making my skin crawl," Crimson said, visibly repulsed. She scrutinized Orla's face and suddenly noticed something odd. "Flora, darling, doesn't she look familiar to you?"
