“Colsen’s a mad dog,” I say. “We’ve got to put him down. I’ll provide the muscle; all I ask is that you let us take care of it ourselves—between wolves. Don’t interfere. As for the spoils…we split fifty-fifty.”

Dutton narrows his eyes, then says, “I want eighty-twenty. For my agreement to let you handle it.”

My jaw is clenched so tightly, I’m worried I might crack my teeth. We wolves can heal from a lot, but we can’t regrow teeth.

I don’t let my frustration show, though. Hell, I don’t care if Dutton takes it all, honestly. Dutton has power, but he’s notoriously low on cash—a problem I don’t have.

But letting him know that? Giving him exactly what he wants with no pushback? Fuck no.

He might think he has me over a barrel, but he doesn’t. And if I let him think he can walk right over me, he’ll go around saying so to everyone who will listen to him.

“Sixty-forty,” I say as I look at my nails.

Dutton shrugs, not agreeing yet, but not pushing the matter further.

“What about the other bosses?” he asks. “Are you anticipating pushback from Remington?”

I shake my head. “Remington’s distracted. His guys are running the game, but he’s got some new clue about his lost kid.” I wave a hand, dismissing it. “He’s not going to get involved right now.”

Dutton nods, giving me a small smile, and I realize that he already knew this. Dutton might not have cash, but he does trade in secrets. Likely, Remington got the clue about his kid from the warden to begin with.

The question was a test.

I don’t like being tested.

If we weren’t on Dutton’s home turf, this conversation would have played out much differently.

And there wouldn’t be very much conversing.

“Sixty-forty. Do we have a deal?”

Dutton gives a small nod, then goes back to flipping through the files on his desk, dismissing me.

If we were anywhere else, I’d rip one of his fingers off for being so disrespectful.

He can’t stay locked up in his ivory tower forever…he has to leave at some point. How’s he’s managed to keep where he lives and how he comes and goes from to get in and out of the prison is a mystery.

Some say there are tunnels large enough to drive through under the prison that run to wherever his home is.

Some say he lives at the prison and doesn’t actually ever leave, which is why no one has been able to catch him outside of these protective walls.

He’s gotten a little too comfortable, feels too secure.

Once I take care of Colsen, once things have settled down…

I’ll find Dutton outside of these walls, and I will make sure he never feels safe and secure again.
