Chapter 75
Brooklyn
“Brooklyn?”
My head swivels towards the door as it pushes open, a dark head peeking from behind it.
“Hudson,” I say with a weak smile.
I’m sitting cross-legged on the ground, my hands still locked to the floor with the chain and padlock.
Hudson frowns at me, stepping inside. “You seem…far better than I expected.”
I give him a little shrug.
I’ve been down here alone for about ten minutes. Actually, I’ve been getting kind of bored.
“No real harm done,” I hear myself say. And what’s weird is that I actually mean it.
Hudson comes over to me, kneeling on the ground in front of me and producing a key from his pocket.
“It’s just…” Hudson says as he works to free me. “I’ve seen people after my dad…teaches them a lesson.”
“Oh?” I ask. “And I’m different?”
“Well, yeah. You’re just sitting here, kind of…peaceful? When he is flying around upstairs all pissed off?”
The satisfaction I get from that is so powerful I have to stop myself from grinning ear to ear.
Aden wants to control me, but I have a say in this, too.
Hudson pauses for a moment and studies me. “What did you do to him?”
I could almost laugh.
What did I, Brooklyn, a nobody, do to the Mafia King?
I don’t give anything away.
Hudson sighs and finishes unlocking the cuffs, setting me free.
I stand, rubbing my wrists—which really are sore—and look around.
“What did he do to you?” Hudson asks, slipping his hands into his pockets and standing as well.
I glance at the whip at the floor. I don’t know how to say the words out loud.
Not just because of how awful Hudson will think it is, and he’d be right.
But because of how much pleasure I took from it.
Hudson’s eyes widen as he sees the direction of my gaze. “Wait, did he…use that on you?”
I meet his eyes and give him a little smile.
“Not hard,” I say, truthfully. After all, I barely feel it now. “I think he was just trying to scare me a little.”
Hudson looks at me, aghast, but my smile only widens.
“Do you want to go upstairs?” I ask.
He nods slowly and gestures towards the door, like he still can’t figure me out.
Hudson scoffs. “No way,” he says with a little laugh. “If you were made, you’d be way more shaken by it. He makes you take all kinds of oaths, lets you see the sort of stuff he’ll…do to you. If you go against the family.”
He grimaces a little at this.
“How do you know?” I cock my head to the side curiously. “Are you made?”
“I’ve been made since I was born,” Hudson murmurs, looking down.
“But you didn’t go through like…a ceremony.”
He shakes his head.
“Then how do you know what it’s like?” I hear myself ask.
Hudson pauses before answering.
“He made me…watch. A few times. Made me…participate occasionally. So I’d know what to do when the time came for me to do the same.”
“Oh,” I say. I pause to consider how it makes me feel. Then I realize. “I think I’d actually like to see that.”
“What?!” Hudson exclaims, looking at me with disgust on his face.
“What?” I reply, frowning at him. “This is my world now. Maybe I’m curious.”
Hudson narrows his eyes at me. “I thought we were leaving.”
And that’s when it hits me.
I don’t want to leave at all.
