Brooklyn knocks gently on the open door to my office, leaning casually against it.

I look up, my expression changing from one of irritation to surprise.

“Brooklyn,” I say, folding my hands on my desk. “What can I do for you?”

“Can I come in?” she asks, tentative.

I nod, waiting as she enters the room and seats herself primly in a chair across from me.

“I just wanted to say thank you,” she says, her voice soft and earnest. “For today. With my sister. That was so wonderful, to have her back in my life for a little bit.”

I have to work hard to keep the smile from my mouth.

But in truth, I’m surprised by the sheer pleasure I feel in hearing her gratitude.

I like it, when she comes to me like this, showing her hand. When she sits quietly before me, looking at me like that. Like she sees me in a different way.

Obedient.

Dammit, but it makes me want to buy her a thousand more horses or sisters or whatever it is that makes her happy.

“You’re welcome,” I say, leaning back in my chair as I study her. I wait for her to continue the conversation.

“Is there, um,” she says, squirming a little in her seat, “anything I can do? To pay you back?”

Slowly, I shake my head no. I won’t ask her for anything, not now.

But I’m also not forgetting the conversation I overheard with her and Hudson in the garden.

I hope, in the end, that the payment for my kindness will be her loyalty.

And her submission.

“Okay,” she says, looking awkwardly down at her hands. “Well, then. Thanks again.”

She stands back up and I look back at my computer, clicking through some files.

When I hear her a second voice, I look back up.

“Brooklyn?” Hudson asks, coming into the office. “What are you doing in here?”

“Nothing,” she says, shaking her head. “Your dad just…did something really nice for me today. So I stopped in to say thanks.”

“Oh?”

Hudson comes in farther, looking between us. To my surprise, he’s frowning. What on earth does he have to be mad about?

“Go on, Brooklyn,” I tell her, keeping my eyes on Hudson. “Let me have a word with my son.”

Obediently—good, just as I like her—she heads back up the stairs towards her room.
