Just then, a maid hurried over. “Ma’am.”

Karen turned, smoothing the loose sleeves of her blouse. “What is it?”

“Mr. Robinson is here. He’s waiting for you in the living room.”

“Daniel’s here?” Karen sounded surprised.

“Yes, ma’am.” The maid nodded.

Karen pinched the edge of her sleeve and followed the maid toward the living room.

Daniel was sitting on the couch, but the moment he saw Karen, he jumped to his feet. “Ma’am.”

Karen beamed at him. “Well, Daniel, what brings you here today?”

Daniel cleared his throat. “Ma’am, I wanted to discuss something with you. It’s about Sherman.”

Adah Bowman never got involved in these matters.

Latham Christensen had passed away years ago.

Right now, the only person who could rein Sherman in was Karen.

Back when Sherman didn’t want to come to Cloudcrest, it was Karen’s insistence that finally persuaded him.

So, if Karen agreed to speak on Rebecca’s behalf, Sherman would almost certainly listen—and agree to marry her.

He weighed his words carefully, then said, “Ma’am, I wanted to talk to you about Sherman’s future—his marriage, to be specific.”
