Watching as Daniel was dragged away, Karen was still fuming, though she tried to reassure herself. “I’m not upset, I’m not upset at all! Getting mad just gives you wrinkles.”

The commotion downstairs caught Adah’s attention, and she came down from upstairs. “Mom, what happened?”

Karen’s barely-suppressed anger flared back up at once. “It’s that boy from the Robinson family! I can’t believe the nerve—he actually dared to talk badly about my granddaughter-in-law!”

“What happened?” Adah asked, curiosity piqued.

Karen recounted the whole incident, and by the time she finished, Adah was fuming too. “What’s gotten into Daniel? He used to be such a polite kid!”

“He’s lost his mind, that’s what! I swear, the Robinsons are going to fall apart with him in charge. And to think our Sherman has always treated him so well!” Karen grumbled as she started taking off her costume. “That’s it! I’m going to see my granddaughter-in-law. I can’t let that brat go around spreading nonsense about her!”

“I’ll come with you,” Adah said, getting up.

Karen waved her off. “No need, I’ll go by myself. Just have someone keep an eye on that little troublemaker!”

“Alright!” Adah nodded.

Karen went to her room to change before heading out—she’d gotten into the habit of putting on fresh clothes whenever she left the house.

As they drove past a grocery market, Karen suddenly said, “Claud, pull over! I want to buy some fruit. My granddaughter-in-law loves the mangosteen from this place.”

Claud offered, “Ma’am, why don’t you wait in the car? I’ll go get them for you.”

“No, you stay right here!” Karen insisted. If she was buying fruit for her granddaughter-in-law, she was going to pick them out herself.

Karen got out and headed into the store. She didn’t just buy mangosteen—she picked up some lychees and a whole selection of Anthea’s favorite fruits.

As Karen was leaving the store, arms full of fruit, someone suddenly slammed into her.

Thud—

Fruit tumbled everywhere, scattering across the ground, and Karen herself was knocked down.
