“Oh.” Adah’s tone was flat, almost dismissive.

She still remembered all too well the day she and Karen had gone to the Morris family to discuss the engagement. Daly and Sandra had teamed up to humiliate both her and Karen, showing them nothing but contempt.

Even now, whenever Adah thought back on that day, her teeth clenched with anger. Latham had treated the Morris family so well in those days. And how had they repaid him? By stabbing him in the back, showing no loyalty or gratitude whatsoever.

So Sandra’s death from carbon monoxide poisoning? Adah couldn’t help but feel it was nothing less than she deserved.

Daniel was stunned by how indifferent Adah’s reaction was. He’d never imagined she could be so cold-blooded. The dead should be respected, after all. Sandra was gone, and yet Adah didn’t even flinch. How could she be so heartless, especially when Rebecca had always looked out for the Christensen family?

No conscience. Absolutely no conscience!

Daniel couldn’t hold back his anger any longer. “Adah! How can you be so callous? No matter what happened, Rebecca is still Sherman’s fiancée! Now her mother’s dead, and you’re not even the least bit upset? Not even sad?”

Adah was known for her gentle temperament, but hearing this, she snapped. “That’s what they deserve! It’s karma!”

Just then, Karen came downstairs. Seeing Adah so worked up, she turned to the maid beside her. “What’s going on? Who was on the phone?”

“Sounded like Mr. Robinson,” the maid replied.

Daniel? Karen’s temper flared instantly. She snatched the phone from Adah’s hand. “You idiot, what do you want from us? Someone died—so what! It’s their own bad luck, serves them right! What goes around comes around! You think I’m supposed to play the saint now? The Morris family loses someone and I’m supposed to forgive their precious angel? Forget it! Not a chance!”

It was harsh, even ruthless. But Karen had never pretended to be a saint. She remembered perfectly well how the Morris family had treated her back then.

Daniel was shaking with rage. He’d never imagined that even after Sandra’s death, Karen could still say such things.

“Mrs. Christensen, don’t you think you’re going too far? Mr. Latham and the Morris family shared a deep bond. How can you just forget everything?” Daniel pressed on, his voice trembling. “Right now, the most important thing is to bring Rebecca here! She’s the only blood relative Mr. Morris has left in this world!”
