Ethan’s lie had just been exposed by Ryan. A moment ago, he was floating on air, thinking he would soon rise to fame and fortune, but now he was so terrified, he nearly wet himself.

Ryan said coldly, "Get out. Go tell Mr. Maxwell that you can do nothing about my condition."

Ethan fled in panic, stumbling over himself.

The butler took him back to see Maxwell. When Charlotte saw him, she stood up excitedly like a hero awaiting a reward.

But then Ethan, filled with shame, said to Maxwell, "I’m sorry, Mr. Maxwell. My knowledge is shallow, and I’m unable to treat Mr. Clarke."

The glass of water in Charlotte’s hand instantly dropped to the floor.

Maxwell shot her a fierce glare and said, "This is the miracle doctor you recommended for Ryan? Charlotte, I almost believed your lies, thinking you truly cared for Ryan. Turns out it was all an act. You found a lousy doctor to treat him; were you hoping he’d die sooner?"

Charlotte was so scared she fell to her knees and said, "Mr. Maxwell, I would never wish to harm Ryan."

She turned her furious eyes on Ethan and asked, "Dr. Ethan, weren’t you the one bragging that your medical skills were far superior to Rose’s? What now? Suddenly you’re not capable?"

Ethan was sweating bullets, his forehead beaded with cold sweat. He said in fear, "Madam Charlotte, Mr. Clarke despises people with poor morals. He found my personal affairs disgraceful and didn’t like me. How could he possibly accept treatment from me?"

Charlotte said angrily, "You’ve ruined me!"

Maxwell watched the two of them go at it like dogs in a fight, his expression turning colder. The seeds of doubt Ryan had whispered in his ears were starting to take root.

Maxwell said, "Charlotte, your bringing this so-called doctor here was just a smokescreen—you two were conspiring behind our backs, trying to destroy Ryan, weren’t you?"

Charlotte frantically shook her head and said, "No, Mr. Maxwell, I swear I didn’t! Please believe me!"

Maxwell gave his verdict and said, "Madam’s conduct is disgraceful. From now on, she’ll receive no more allowance. And this so-called Dr. Ethan won’t be practicing in Crestview ever again."

The butler replied, "Yes, sir."

Ethan left like a stray dog, utterly broken.

No matter how hard he racked his brain, he couldn’t figure out how Ryan knew so much about his romantic affairs.

Ryan descended from the upper floor and saw Charlotte slumped on the ground in despair. Noah opened his mouth, wanting to plead on her behalf, but Maxwell’s rage made him retreat timidly; his look was helpless. He could only turn to Ryan for help.

He said, "Ryan, your stepmother meant no harm. She was just naive and deceived by that so-called Dr. Ethan. Please forgive her."
