He carried Rose into the office’s private recovery room. Though labeled “temporary,” the space was elegantly appointed, complete with a plush bed, sofa, and tasteful furnishings.

Laying her down gently, he leaned over and touched her forehead. “Rose, where does it hurt?”

She couldn’t speak. The drug was slowly wearing off, and she tried to raise her hand—only for it to fall helplessly back down.
