“His wife just gave birth, and he’s already cheating? What kind of man is that?”

Face burning with shame and fury, Ethan snapped, “Vivian, stop it! You’re making a scene. This is all a misunderstanding!”

He scrambled to explain, “Rose had a fight with Houston—serious enough that they might divorce. Houston didn’t come to pick her up this morning, so I just gave her a lift.”

Vivian’s lips curled into a gleeful smirk when she heard that. Then she turned around and said to Rose in a fake-sweet voice, “Rose, you and Houston are from two completely different worlds. Men like him—they just play with emotions. Honestly, you’re better off without him.”

She was thrilled by the idea of their divorce. If Rose lost her position as the wife of a rich heir, the gap between them wouldn’t be so unbearable. Vivian would finally feel like she could breathe.

But Rose wasn’t sure anymore.

Houston hadn’t come home last night. He hadn’t picked her up this morning. Was he really serious about divorcing her?

Her phone rang. The shrill sound made her heart lurch.

She picked up immediately, and a panicked voice burst through the receiver. “Rose, where are you? My brother is drunk. He won’t listen to anyone and won’t come home. He keeps calling your name. You’re the only one who can get through to him.”

“Where is he?” Rose’s voice trembled without her realizing.

“Fate’s Sky,” the voice said urgently. “Hurry! If you don’t come soon, he’s going to drink himself to death!”

Rose hung up and bolted.

Ethan shouted behind her, bitter and jealous, “He doesn’t even care about you! Why are you running after him?”

She stopped abruptly, turned her head, and gave a small smile. “He’s my husband. As long as we’re still married, it’s my duty to protect him. Ethan, can you drive me?”

Ethan froze in surprise. For once, she wasn’t pushing him away.

She used to avoid him like the plague, and now she was almost… friendly?

He lit up. “Sure.”

But just as he took a step forward, Vivian’s icy voice cut in: “Ethan, I’m getting discharged today. Aren’t you supposed to drive me and the baby home?”

Ethan looked helplessly at Vivian. Her pettiness was exhausting. He snapped, “I’ll be back quickly. It won’t delay anything.”

Vivian’s glare turned lethal.

Ethan had no choice. “Sorry, Rose. I can’t today.”

Normally, Rose would be understanding. She’d avoid giving any reason for misunderstanding.
