The butler said nothing.

He now understood—the old man's plan had little to do with birthdays. He had something else in mind entirely.

Ethan had vanished from Vivian’s life, as if he’d disappeared off the face of the earth. Meanwhile, her belly grew bigger by the day. Vivian knew that if things dragged on like this, she would be the one left with nothing in the end.

She swallowed her pride and went to the hospital to seek Ethan out.

When Ethan ran into her in the corridor, he looked utterly cold—no surprise in his expression, just a hollow gaze.

Vivian snapped, “Ethan, what is this? I’m carrying your baby and you’re ignoring us like we don’t exist. Are you seriously planning to abandon us?”

Following his mother’s advice to the letter, Ethan replied with a stiff face, “I’ve thought about it carefully. Our families are not a good match. I can’t reach the level of the Brown family. This marriage—it ends here. As for the baby, get rid of it.”

Vivian had often compared Ethan to Houston, her vanity making her second-guess being with Ethan. But until she found someone better, Ethan was still her best fallback option. And now, even that was slipping away—she panicked.

“You want me to get an abortion? Ethan, do you have any idea how much damage that’ll do to my body?”

“If you insist on keeping the baby,” Ethan said, “I’ll send monthly support. That’s all I can promise.”

Vivian stared at him in disbelief. “You want the baby, but not me?”

Ethan replied, “Vivian, weren’t you and your mother always complaining that I’m poor and useless? That I didn’t buy you luxury gifts, and mooched off your family? If that’s how you see me, how could I possibly marry you?”

Vivian’s face darkened. She knew she and her mother had said some nasty, inappropriate things that had wounded Ethan’s pride.

But she never expected he’d actually break up with her over it.

She couldn’t accept being dumped by Ethan. A breakup would cost her far too much.

“Ethan, only I get to say we’re done. I don’t agree to this breakup.” Her voice turned imperious, a direct command.

Ethan’s eyes flared red. “Vivian, I hate how domineering and unreasonable you are.”

Just then, Rose walked out of a nearby exam room with a cup in hand—and stumbled right into the scene of Ethan and Vivian’s breakup.

She was stunned.

Ethan had been willing to abandon a girlfriend who had once given him everything—Rose herself—in order to be with Vivian. She thought their love must have been rock-solid. But now, it shattered like glass.

Ethan’s face twisted into an unreadable expression.

The last person he probably wanted to see was Rose.
