"It belongs to a friend who temporarily left it here," Benjamin said plainly.

However, this piece of information surprised Shannon. She pressed further, "What friend? Male or female? How old are they? What's their name? Do you have a photo?"

She asked a series of questions rapidly, clearly forgetting that they merely gotten acquainted recently.

Then again, Benjamin didn't feel offended by her questions. After a moment of silence, he simply replied, "Female. Around my age. She didn't mention her name."

Benjamin continued, "She left it here temporarily, saying that someone would come to take it."

What he didn't mention was that when she left him the branch, she had nonchalantly chosen a spot on his antique shelf and relocated an ancient dagger that had originally been there.

As someone with OCD, Benjamin couldn't tolerate such an unsightly object in his study, especially when it occupied space on his precious shelf. But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't move the glass cover protecting the branch.

Over time, he had grown accustomed to its presence. Benjamin thought about telling Shannon that the branch couldn't be removed, but before he could speak, she reached out.
