As she guessed, Heston couldn't bring himself to harm them. Perhaps it wasn't fear, but the reluctance to hurt them that was at work. Even as souls, these babies were ones he'd once protected.

Shannon admitted that it was an underhanded method, but a method that worked was the best.

When she and Benjamin approached, Heston instinctively tried to fling the baby paper figures off. But before he could act, Shannon shouted, "Don't move! These are recently departed baby souls! They have weak spiritual strength, and one careless burst of your filth energy could crush them!"

The words froze Heston, who'd been about to escape, in place.

Shannon felt a pang of guilt. She was lying; the spiritual strength of these baby ghosts had been reinforced to withstand his filth energy, or they would never have been able to get close to him.

She was using them to trap Heston in exchange for an opportunity to speak with him.

As she took another step forward, Cassidy leaped out to spread her arms wide and protected Heston. Her eyes brimmed with determination and pleading.

"Don't hurt mister!" Heston was a kind ghost. He fed on rats and not humans.

Shannon paused and gazed at Cassidy. From the latter's face, she could read a tragic story and understood why she'd chosen to stay with Heston.

Her tone softened, and she said, "I won't hurt him. I just want to talk."
